Turn of the Tide Studio
Situated right on Fore Street in the centre of St Just, The Turn of the Tide is the studio and home of artists Tom Henderson Smith and Gabrielle Hawkes. You can be sure of finding a friendly welcome and both Tom and Gabrielle are happy to talk about their working processes.
Open at 10 most mornings and often open until 6 p.m. it's nevertheless best to ring first if you are making a special trip to see them. Avoid between about 1 and 3 as they are usually out walking the dog then!
Tom's paintings and drawings take inspiration from the festivals and people as well as from the natural forms and glowing light of this area. An interaction of shapes and rich colour variations within a wide range of different picture formats are characteristic of the way he celebrates his love of this landscape and culture.
Gabrielle finds inspiration in the interplay between inner and outer landscapes, drawing upon dream, myth and personal symbolism as well as the coastal environment. Her vivid paintings and screen-prints are often moonlit and have a visionary quality to them. She also likes painting cats and is open to commissions.
Their work includes paintings, drawings, wood-engravings, screen-prints, mono-prints, open edition prints from paintings and cards.
Visit Tom's website, where you will mainly find images of Tom's work but the My Shared Studio page gives links to two websites that feature Gabrielle's work, the Penwith Printmakers site and the St Ives Society of Artists site.
